Creating a workplace that brings people back together

Lantra is the leading awarding body for the land-based and environmental sector across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. For over 40 years, they’ve supported a diverse and sustainable workforce, working across sectors from forestry and food production to pest management and plant maintenance.

When conversations began, Lantra’s existing head office workplace no longer reflected how the organisation had evolved. Parts of the office dated back to the 1980s, and while the space was still in use, it was underutilised and not supporting modern ways of working.

A pre-occupancy workplace assessment highlighted a clear opportunity for change:

  • 3.7 out of 10: Employees rated the workplace as undesirable.
  • 1.6 days per week: Was the average time spent in the office.
  • 68%: Rated the space as 4 or below.
  • 73%: Used the office selectively rather than as a primary place of work.
  • 12%: Showed no interest in using the office at all.

Together, these insights painted a clear picture. The workplace was not just outdated, it was not supporting the experience, connection or energy people needed from the office.

Recognising the opportunity to do more with what they had, Lantra partnered with Blueprint to transform the space, creating a workplace that better supports their people, improves day-to-day functionality, and reflects the organisation today.

Enabling better connection

A key challenge within the existing space was its layout. The office was divided by physical barriers, with multiple doors separating teams and limiting day-to-day interaction. While functional, it made communication and collaboration more difficult.

The introduction of an open-plan layout has made it easier for people to connect, share information and have more conversations throughout the day. Teams are no longer working in isolation; instead, the space supports visibility, accessibility and stronger cross-team communication.

This change has had a noticeable impact on how people interact, with more natural, informal conversations happening as part of everyday work.

Designing for collaboration, not just meetings

Rather than defaulting to a meeting room-heavy layout, Blueprint worked closely with Lantra to challenge assumptions and rethink what the space actually needed to do.

Through a detailed consultation process, the design was shaped around real working patterns. The focus moved away from simply providing more meeting rooms, and towards creating a variety of environments that support different types of interaction.

Collaboration is now embedded into the workplace, with open settings that allow for quick discussions, shared problem-solving and ongoing dialogue between teams. Breakout spaces play an important role in this, providing areas where people can step away from their desks, connect socially, and build stronger working relationships. These spaces support both wellbeing and productivity, reinforcing the value of time spent in the office.

A collaborative approach built on clarity and trust

From the outset, the project was shaped through a structured and collaborative approach. Staff surveys, a design council and wider engagement across the organisation ensured that employees had the opportunity to contribute throughout the process, with some individuals representing multiple perspectives to help inform key decisions.

This level of involvement helped create a workplace that reflects how people actually work, while also building a shared sense of ownership across the team. The finished space feels like something employees have contributed to, not something delivered to them.

Alongside this, clear project management and consistent communication ensured the process ran smoothly from concept through to delivery. Regular meetings, defined scope and transparency around budget meant there were no unexpected changes, allowing Lantra’s team to stay focused on key decisions with confidence.

Building a foundation for the future

As Lantra marks its 60th year, the transformation comes at a significant moment for the organisation. Lantra is also launching a refreshed strategic plan, setting the direction for the next five years. The investment in the workplace reflects that forward-looking approach, creating an environment that supports both current needs and future growth.

The design has been carefully considered to ensure long-term flexibility, allowing the space to adapt as the business evolves. Rather than a fixed solution, it provides a foundation that can respond to changing requirements over time.

A workplace aligned to Lantra’s next chapter

The completed workplace represents more than a physical transformation.

It reflects how Lantra is evolving as an organisation, more connected, more collaborative, and focused on the future. By investing in both its people and its environment, Lantra has created a space that supports its long-term ambitions while reinforcing its commitment to the region it operates in.

As the organisation moves into its next chapter, the workplace will continue to play a key role in bringing people together, supporting productivity, and enabling the business to grow.

“From the outset, the process was really clear. Blueprint managed everything from concept through to delivery, and there were no surprises along the way. The project ran smoothly, with regular updates and a clear understanding of scope and budget throughout.”
