Mars Birstall is a key Petcare site for the global Mars brand, producing dog and cat treats within a busy manufacturing environment. The team was working hard, but their old office space wasn’t doing enough to bring people together.

Where we started

Mars already had a strong culture, shaped by its Five Principles: Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficience and Freedom.

At Birstall, our goal was to make that culture visible in the everyday. The site was busy, operationally complex and full of brilliant people doing important work, but the office itself needed to work harder for them.

Tom Kilroy and the onsite innovation project team had already started exploring what could change and developed the One Birstall concept: a connected site where teams feel informed, aligned and part of something bigger.

Through workshops, engagement sessions and open conversations, we helped turn those early ideas into a clear brief grounded in real needs.

Where we focused

With One Birstall at the heart of the project, we focused on spaces that would bring people together and help them feel part of a real community. Clear communication mattered too. In a fast-moving manufacturing environment, people need to know what is happening, why it matters and where they fit in. The workplace had to support everything from site-wide updates to day-to-day operational conversations. Keeping associates engaged through the change was just as important. The build meant temporary moves, careful coordination and regular updates, so people felt part of the journey rather than disrupted by it.

What changed

Mars Birstall now has a workplace that gives One Birstall a proper home.

The new Park and Auditorium are flexible space for celebrations, activities and site-wide updates. At launch, around 200 people gathered comfortably, with the space doing exactly what it was designed to do.

A dedicated panel room gives teams a consistent setting for structured updates, product quality reviews and shared discussions. Smaller co-creation and collaboration settings support project work and problem-solving throughout the day.

Most importantly, the new environment has brought more team members back on site. Since completion, attendance has increased, with people choosing to spend more time there because the workplace supports teamwork, connection and pride.

A strong culture already existed. Now it has room to grow.
"I genuinely enjoyed the process, and I would absolutely recommend Blueprint to anyone looking to transform their workplace."
