Ashby School came to Blueprint with a proud history, a strong reputation and an estate that needed to work harder for modern school life. With more than 1,700 students and staff using the site every day, the school needed spaces that supported learning, improved daily experience and helped Ashby present itself with the confidence its reputation deserved.
Where we started
Ashby School is one of Leicestershire’s best-performing state upper schools, with a history stretching back 400 years.
But across the estate, some areas were no longer doing the school justice. The team needed practical refurbishment across key spaces, from student-facing areas to staff facilities, while making sure each phase worked around the realities of a busy school environment.
The challenge was to modernise without losing the character, credibility and sense of pride that made Ashby feel like Ashby.
Where we focused
Working closely with the head, business manager, estates manager, library staff and students, we identified where better design could unlock more value. Some areas needed to work harder. Some needed to feel more welcoming. Others needed to make a stronger first impression.
The project was delivered in phases, keeping disruption under control while giving each space the attention it needed.
What changed
Ashby School now has a more joined-up, polished estate that better reflects the quality of the school.
The refurbishment included redesigned signage, canteens, lecture theatre, library, staff room and reception. Each area was planned to make better use of the available space and create a stronger experience for the people using it every day.
The impact
Students gained brighter, more effective places to learn, eat and gather. Staff gained improved spaces to work and recharge. Visitors gained a clearer, more confident first impression of the school from the moment they arrived.
The result is a school environment that supports current students while helping Ashby continue to attract future ones.
